Dr. Ke Weilin

An invisible line guided the Canadian missionary Dr. George McKay to spread the gospel in Formosa (now Taiwan). Dr. William L. Ko was the fourth generation descendant of the Dr. McKay, born in 1927, and completed his education at Tamsui Elementary School, Tamsui Middle School, and Taiwan National University. Before he left to study abroad at the age of 31 in 1958, he had already survived major diseases like diphtheria and malaria, not to mention the horror that was World War II. In the medically deprived environment of that time, he lost a brother and two sisters, and experienced the events of February 28 Incident, as well as the protests against the United Kingdom in Taiwan when diplomatic relationship ended between the two. William Ko’s tear and blood as he survived the various crossroads of history was a reflection of Taiwan’s tumultuous history and also witness to the history of the Mckay family. He was the first Taiwanese to obtain a master's and a doctorate degree in aerospace engineering from California Institute of Technology, and was a scientist, mathematician, inventor, and artist all rolled into one.
In 2015, he received the highest honor the U.S. National Aeronautical and Space Administration (NASA) could bestow – the Distinguished Service Medal. He was the only scientist to have received this honor at NASA’s Armstrong Flight Research Center. He also holds the record as the longest serving scientist at NASA – when he retired in 2018, he had worked at the Administration for over 40 years.
Another of his achievement was the Blatz-Ko Constitutive Law that he created with his postgraduate advisor, which has been awarded an invention patent four times by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).
Dr. Ko is also a well-known artist. He was often invited to hold solo exhibitions for his watercolor paintings, and he often used his exceptional painting skills to compose impromptu works, so as to demonstrate his Ko-style watercolor theory. His works are unique in the warmth and hope they convey. In 1968, at the World Trade Fair held in San Antonio, Texas, Dr. Ko was invited to demonstrate his advanced watercolor painting technique in front of the then Texas governor John Connolly, U.S. President Johnson, and numerous international dignitaries, drawing significant praise from the audience. That painting, ‘LBJ Ranch in Springtime' , is now in the permanent collection of the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library in Austin, Texas. The Texas governor also made him an honorary Texas citizen for this special contribution he made towards art history in Texas. His early still life works of farms, farmlands, oxens…all these simple and plain depiction of the Taiwanese country side, is made even more valuable with its combination of art and history.
Dr. McKay and his descendents have continued to maintain their faith and to walk with the lord, shining brightly still on the international stage; they play witness not only to the grace of god, but also the grace of Taiwan.

【A Short Song】
The breeze blows, the willow branches sway
Reflecting on the water, dancing like a dragon Looking at the golden sunrise, my heart Is filled with hope, and happiness every day On a warm spring day, butterflies spread their wings Surround flowers, joyously dancing (Translated from Chinese by Te-chang Mike Lo) |
